Achalasia is a motor disorder of the esophagus characterized by the absence of peristalsis of the esophageal body and dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is unable to relax after swallowing. In other terms, achalasia is a rare distal motility disorder, in which the food bolus gets trapped in the sphincter, also known as the “cardias,” on its way to the stomach and sometimes back up into the esophagus. In this pathology, the neurons of the esophageal myenteric plexus are irreversibly destroyed.
