Emergency Medicine continues to evolve as a fundamental specialty within the house of Medicine. We are one of the few specialties that are willing to manage all presentations, no matter what method of arrival, what type of patient or what time of day. Paediatric Emergency Medicine is a key component of general Emergency Medicine practice. This has become more evident as it becomes increasingly difficult for families to access care for children on an emergent basis. Most paediatric presentations are straightforward, single system problems that can be easily managed according to established guidelines. However, a small number of children are very ill, or potentially complicated, and require specialised knowledge and skills to manage safely. This can be anxiety-provoking for parents, children and clinicians. Successful assessment and management of these cases is hugely rewarding and satisfying. However, mismanagement of a single case can have devastating consequences. The aim of this text is to provide a structured, consensus-based approach to common emergency presentations, important rare emergencies, and to describe administrative and organisational issues for Emergency Departments. This edition has been revised to include the latest guidelines for assessment and resuscitation following cardiac arrest, sepsis and other critical illnesses and update approaches to important advances such as bedside ultrasound, management of behavioural disturbance, clinical teaching and research. The evidence base for Paediatric Emergency Medicine continues to improve with significant changes to guidelines for common conditions including asthma, status epilepticus, head injury and sepsis. This evidence is being driven by a number of national and international paediatric research networks, and the global Pediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN). This text is the culmination of the contributions by more than 100 authors and a dedicated editorial team.
