When I was approached to put together and edit a collection of chapters on construction economics, I had no choice but to accept the invitation. I had been taught building economics in my undergraduate degree course in Building Technology at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana; and on the MSc course in Construction Economics and Management at University College London (UCL), I was taught by Dr Patricia Hillebrandt. In her highly interactive lecture sessions, we went through, section by section, the contents of Economic Theory and the Construction Industry, which Dr Hillebrandt had written a few years earlier. In writing my dissertation for the masters degree, and then doing the research for my doctoral degree, I had access to all the reports of the Building Economics Research Unit, which had been set up by Professor Duccio Turin, as well as the special tutelage of Dr Hillebrandt. I am grateful to Dr Hillebrandt for writing the Foreword to the book. I also thank Professor Will Hughes for the great help he gave me on this book. He provided me with a great deal of incisive critical comments on the first draft of the original introduction, which served as a guide for the authors on what the book was setting out to achieve. I thank my colleagues in construction economics research who accepted my invitation to write chapters for the book. I am happy to have received a positive response to my request from so many eminent researchers in construction economics. I appreciate the hard work all of them put in, especially the quick response to my many requests. I thank them also for being willing to review the draft chapters written by each other. Judging from the revisions made to the first drafts, the comments were useful in enabling the authors to improve the drafts. The subject of construction economics focuses on the application of economic methods to every phase of the planning, design, construction and maintenance of built items. Over time, the field has been extended beyond the minimisation of capital cost on projects to include life cycle cost considerations, the idea of value, sustainable construction and climate change, and applications of technology. Attention has also been extended to include consideration of companies and organisations, as well as the strategic, industry-level considerations involving the economy and construction markets, government policy and regulations, and international finance and economics. Construction economics is an important subject of research, owing to the strategic significance of the construction industry. However, the development of construction economics as a distinct scientific discipline has been very slow. In what way can this book be the turning point for greater pace, and achievement in future? What is different about this book, which makes one convinced that it is what will stimulate effective progress? This is a major contribution to the body of knowledge on construction economics. It discusses some aspects of the subject for the first time. These include the philosophy and principles of the subject, the form it took in antiquity, and the historical development of the field. It considers contemporary issues on all the topics. It looks forward into the future and draws out a path for the development of the subject. The book does not address every topic in construction economics. It has not settled all the questions on construction economics. The debate on some of the issues will, and should, con tinue. However, I believe readers will obtain great insights into the subject. I am proud to have been able to help in making this book possible. I have every confidence in saying that this is a Research Companion to Construction Economics.
