This book was originally envisioned as a research monograph on Deleuze’s The Logic of Sense. In that form, it would have been an analysis of a somewhat neglected work in a field of Deleuze scholarship that has mainly advanced through a combination of studies focused on individual works by Deleuze (or Deleuze and Guattari), meta-evaluative studies that tend to be synoptic and theme oriented and not built on close readings or book-by-book analyses, and studies applying Deleuze’s thought to a particular field or subfield, such as Deleuze and politics or mathematics or cinema. After producing some 35,000 words on the role of the concept of sense in Deleuze’s earlier works without even reaching Difference and Repetition, it became clear that the project had become a detailed study of the role and development of the concept of sense in Deleuze’s philosophy. My intention at that point was to cover Deleuze’s entire career, including his collaborations with Guattari. But that pursuit quickly became too unwieldly for a single project and would have taken substantially more time to complete. And so, working through a period that included the birth of my two children, a worldwide pandemic, and a number of difficult and disturbing social and political events and upheavals across the world — including a kind of ongoing collective political, social, and economic trauma in the country where I’ve made my home that is colloquially known as Brexit, and another in my country of birth linked to Donald Trump’s elections and presidencies — the project eventually took its final form as a study of the role of sense across Deleuze’s early works up to his encounter with Guattari.
