This book is concerned with the twin challenges of human development and climate change. It aims to provide the reader with a panorama of the different ways in which climate affects development and how the expected changes in climate over the next century are likely to influence the development paths of both rich and poor countries. For many years already, we — the editors of the book — had dedicated much of our research effort to climate and development challenges for humanity. It was in 1989 that Anil Markandya co-authored “Blueprint for a Green Economy” with David Pearce and Edward Barbier. The “Blueprint” was a pioneering contribution to greening economies, leading them toward sustainable development. Edward Barbier is also a contributor of a chapter in this book.
