This book is the fruition of three years of effort made by all co-authors and editors. It summarizes recent innovative applications in plant biotechnology in two important areas: plant secondary metabolism and plant molecular pharming.

In the section on plant secondary metabolism, the first chapter focuses on recent innovations and discoveries using the medicinal plant species Withania somnifera as a pharma factory and its tremendous potential in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. The second chapter highlights several very promising biotechnological approaches and applications used to produce a number of important tropane alkaloids. The third chapter illustrates the applications and mechanisms of specific plant secondary metabolites as anticancer drugs and bioactive compounds, and their mode of action. The fourth chapter describes the in silico and computational analysis of African medicinal plants and reports the content of some databases and libraries as CamMedNP, ConMedNP, NANPDB, p-ANAPL, AfroDb, AfroCancer, AfroMalariaDb, Afrotryp, Ethiopia (ETMDB), and South Africa (SANCDB). The fifth chapter discusses the ethno botanical uses of the Strychnos species found in the Southern African region and explores a variety of chemical compounds extracted from different Strychnos species, while addressing the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of these compounds. The sixth chapter explains the role of Agrobacterium rhizogenes as a vector in transforming medicinal plants and for inducing hairy roots. Hairy roots are a profound tool used in plant metabolic engineering to enhance secondary metabolite production and accumulation.
