This book introduces the concepts and principles of media processing and its applications in pattern recognition by adopting a hands-on approach using program implementations. The primary objective of this book is to inform the reader about the tools and techniques using which image, audio and video fles can be read, modifed, and written using the data analysis and visualization tool MATLABR. This book has been written for graduate and post-graduate students studying courses on image processing, speech and language processing, signal processing, video object detection and tracking, and related multimedia technologies with a focus on practical implementations using programming constructs and skill developments. Benefts of this book will be to provide a concise explanation of software technologies related to media processing and its varied applications along with relevant theoretical backgrounds together with steps for practical implementations, while avoiding lengthy theoretical discourses. This book is also relevant for researchers in the feld of pattern recognition, computer vision, and content-based retrieval, and for students of MATLAB courses dealing with media processing, statistical analysis, and data visualization. MATLAB by MathWorks, Inc. is a data analysis and visualization tool suitable for numerical computations, algorithmic development, and simulation applications. One of the advantages of MATLAB over other contemporary programming tools is the repository of a large number of ready-made functions for a plethora of media processing tasks which can directly be included in custom applications and problem-solving tasks without any additional programming efforts. It is therefore necessary for the prospective programmer and student to be informed about these functions so that they can be applied as and when necessary for rapid application development and reduction in efforts and time. MATLAB functions in general are divided into two broad categories: a basic set and an extended set. The basic set, referred to in this book as basic MATLAB (BM) functions, deals with elementary functionalities like data-type conversions, arithmetic relational and logical operations, algebraic and trigonometrical computations, interpolation and Fourier analysis, a variety of graphical plots and annotations, fle I/O operations, and different types of basic programming structures. It is assumed that the reader has rudimentary knowledge of MATLAB and is familiar with basic mathematical operations like matrix algebra and trigonometry. This book therefore is not meant for teaching elementary MATLAB to the beginner, although a short description of the functions has been provided wherever they have been frst used within this book.
