The interest of surgeons in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries dates back to the nineteenth century, and the first surgical technique descriptions were reported at the beginning of the twentieth century. Among the pioneers of knee ligament surgery, an Italian surgeon, Riccardo Galeazzi, should be credited for the first known report of an ACL reconstruction technique using the semitendinosus tendon.
