The aim of this book is to discuss the phenomenon of life, including its origin and evolution (and also including human cultural evolution) against the background of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics and information theory. The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy (disorder) of the universe always increases. The seeming contradiction between the second law of thermodynamics and the high degree of order and complexity produced by living organisms will be a central theme of the book.
