Prompt Engineering is the practice of deliberately composing, evaluating, and refining prompts to produce reliable, predictable outputs from Language Models. Every word in that definition carries weight. Deliberately means with purpose, structure, and criteria, not by feel. Composing means designing the prompt as an object with parts, not typing a question and hoping. Evaluating means measuring the output against defined acceptance criteria, not personal judgment. Refining means iterating systematically, not randomly changing words until something sticks. Reliable and predictable are the outcomes that distinguish Prompt Engineering from its alternative. Prompt Engineering is not model fine-tuning. It does not modify the model’s weights, change its training data, or require API access beyond what any user already has. It works entirely at the interface level, with the text that goes into the model and the text that comes out. This makes it a design discipline, not an ML discipline.
