The idea to write this book arose from daily interactions with final-year medical students and resident physicians training to become vascular surgeons. I repeatedly notice that, although a great deal of factual knowledge is acquired during medical school, applying this knowledge practically to clinical situations and examination settings often proves challenging. Who hasn’t experienced this: you enter your clinical routine full of drive, feel thoroughly prepared, have checklists ready for every conceivable situation, and then suddenly find yourself “drawing a complete blank” as soon as an unexpected question seems to throw everything into confusion. This also becomes apparent in exam situations, when factual knowledge is challenged by critical follow-up questions. Listing facts and key points is a major strength of us physicians, because we learn it from the very beginning of our studies and later specialist training (we have to). We study with logically organized and tabulated learning materials. However, the subsequent application and understanding of these facts rarely occurs in a logically ordered sequence, but rather in an unstructured, mixed-up manner, arising from the specific situation. This is typical and characteristic of everyday clinical practice. It can be compared to a toddler learning their native language: first, the most important words are learned, then more are added, until eventually simple sentences can be formed. This playful and practically oriented way of learning does not require tables and chapters, but simply continuous learning and application in daily life. The purpose of this book is therefore to provide a supplement to strictly organized factual knowledge. The concept is to address specific issues that frequently arise in clinical practice, thereby supplementing and interlinking existing knowledge and enabling a better understanding of interrelationships. The book is intended both for beginners in vascular surgery (laypersons) and for colleagues who are about to take their specialist examination. Here, one can test their knowledge in a playful way and become curious about further insights. Even for me, there were numerous moments while writing when I looked things up and learned something new, which has helped me in my daily clinical practice (and still does). This book was written alongside my full-time professional work, which is why I got into the habit of writing for 30 min each morning and evening at set times. Often enough, I had to interrupt my writing “in the middle of things” when the time limit was up, only to continue in the evening or the next day. Nevertheless, I was surprised by how much I could accomplish in 2 × 30 min each day. True to the saying: constant dripping wears away the stone. Ideally, this book can serve as a companion long before the looming specialist examination, much like an Advent calendar. Anyone who invests a limited amount of time each day (e.g., 30 min or one question per day) will quickly be surprised by the impact on their individual knowledge base and clinical practice.
