The word “theology” evokes a host of different thoughts and feelings. To some, the word conjures up images of people with their noses stuck in old books and their minds far removed from the realities of everyday life. To others, it is a buzzword used by the religious thought police when making charges of heresy. And to others still, the word is simply a question mark, invoking the humble inquiry of “Theology? What is that?” To those in the last camp, you are in luck! This chapter is an introduction to Christian theology. And to those in the first two camps, it is my prayer that you will come to understand theology for what it really is—not as some set of abstract, impractical ideas or a verbal sledgehammer to beat down someone who disagrees with you—but as an attempt to further understand God, his world, and our place in it.
