Sal was upset—more than upset—and, surprisingly, it didn’t just have to do with the new baby. It also had to do with Uncle Jake, and it had to do with underwear. Uncle Jake had called her “Salamander” again, which she hated, and she couldn’t find her new underpants, her favorite pair. Sal was mad and sad. Her face was hot and her eyes were glittering. She stomped off to her room and slammed the door. That’s how mad she was. But once she’d gotten the door slamming out of her system, the sadness took over. She collapsed in a puddle at the foot of her bed and cried.
