The Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences, abbreviated as IPME RAS, was established in September 1986 as the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the USSR Academy of Sciences named after academician A. A. Blagonravov. In 1991, according to the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Leningrad branch of the Blagonravov Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the USSR Academy of Sciences was renamed into the Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering of the USSR Academy of Sciences. This was the beginning of a new stage of the institute as an independent institution.
