Meeting of Shams and Maulana

هر زمان نو می‌شود دنیا و ما

Every moment this world renews and we

بی‌خبر از نو شدن اندر بقا

Unaware of changes, assume it is permanent.

پس تو را هر لحظه مرگ و رجعتی‌ست

Every instant is a death and resurrection for you

مصطفی فرمود دنیا ساعتی‌ست

Mostafa declared, world lasts only for a moment

آزمودم مرگ من در زندگی‌ست

I have experienced, life is death for me

چون رهی زین زندگی پایندگی‌ست

If I can escape from this life, I will live eternally.

قطره‌ای از باده‌های آسمان

A drop of heavenly wine!

این جهان زندان و ما زندانیان

This world is a prison and we are the prisoners

حفره کن زندان و خود را وارهان

Tunnel through the prison and liberate yourself!

آدمی مخفی‌ست در زیر زبان

Mankind is concealed under language,

این زبان پرده است بر درگاه جان

This tongue is a veil hiding the court of the soul

تیر پرّان بین و ناپیدا کمان

See the arrow flying, and the bow not insight

جان‌ها پیدا و پنهان جانِ جان

The souls are visible, but soul of souls is hidden.

Who are you?

ره نمایم همرهت باشم رفیق

I am a mentor, I’ll accompany you, my friend,

من قلاووزم در این راه دقیق

I am the vanguard on this subtle path.

 همدلی کن‌‌ای رفیق!

Show some empathy, O Friend!

در عشق سلیمانی من همدم مرغانم

With Solomon-like love, I converse with the birds

هم عشق پری دارم، هم مرد پری‌خوانم

I have jinn-like love and I summon the jinn’s presence too.

هر کس که پری‌خوتر در شیشه کنم زودتر

The more someone is like a jinn, The faster I put him in the bottle.

برخوانمُ افسونش حراقه بجنبانم

I summon him and charm him, By rubbing fire-stones.

هم ناطق و خاموشم، هم لوح خموشانم

I am speaking, and I am silent too, And I am the tablet of the silent ones too.

هم خونم و هم شیرم، هم طفلم و هم پیرم

I am blood, and I am milk too, I am a child, and I am old too.

کیستم من؟ کیستم من؟ چیستم من؟

Who am I? … Who am I? … What am I?

تا نگردی پاک‌دل چون جبرئیل

Until you have become pure-hearted Like (Angle) Gabriel,

گرچه گنجی در نگنجی در جهان

Even though you are a treasure of knowledge, You won’t be content in the world!.

رخت بربند و برس در کاروان

Pack your goods, and catch the caravan.

آدمی چون کشتی است و بادبان

A human is like a sailboat, Waiting for the wind

تا کی آرَد باد را آن بادران؟

Waiting for the wind to be brought By that wind master

هیچ نندیشم به‌جز دلخواه تو

I think only of that which you long for..

شکر ایزد را که دیدم روی تو

Thanks God that I saw thy face

یافتم ناگه رهی من سوی تو

That I suddenly found a path towards you.

چشم گریانم ز گریه کُند بود

My eyes were weak of weeping

یافت نور از نرگس جادوی تو

But found light in your bewitching eyes.

بس بگفتم کو وصال و کو نجاح

I asked many times, many times “Where is union? Where is salvation?”

برد این کوکو مرا در کوی تو

This “Where? Where?”, took me to your alley.

جست‌وجویی در دلم انداختی

You set my heart searching

تا ز جست‌وجو روم در جوی تو

And that search brought me to your stream.

خاک را‌هایی و هویی کی بُدی؟

Would there be any clamor on the earth

گر نبودی جذب‌های و هوی تو

If it were not for the allure of your clamor?

مخزن إنّا فتحنا برگشا

Open the treasure of “Verily We opened …”

سرّ جان مصطفی را بازگو

Repeat the secret of Mostafa’s soul.

مستجاب آمد دعای عاشقان

The prayer of lovers are answered

ای دعاگو آن دعا را بازگو

O you who pray, repeat that prayer,

چون دهانم خورد از حلوای او

When my mouth tasted his sweetness

چشم‌روشن گشتم و بینای او

My eye became enlightened and I saw him.

پا نهم گستاخ چون خانه روم

I step boldly on my way home

پا نلرزانم نه کورانه روم

My legs don’t tremble, and I do not go blindly.
