I begin with an apology to myself as much as to my readers: books take a long time to write. At an exhibition in Cambridge in 1983 for the ve- hundredth anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth the nal display was an old charred volume. Alongside was a description of how Luther burned books in 1520 to defy his own excommunication, and how his books were burned in turn to mark him as anathema.
