On July 11, 2018, Adnan Oktar, a controversial Turkish preacher and TV personality, was arrested on charges of fraud. Oktar is particularly well-known for two things: he is a fierce critic of the theory of evolution, publishing works on the topic under the pseudonym Harun Yahya, and he does his televangelist preaching alongside his so-called kittens, scantily clad young women who appear on his show with heavy makeup and nightclub attire. For many pious people in Turkey (and likely elsewhere), belly dancing and sexually provocative images—the usual scene on Oktar’s TV show—would be considered anything but Islamic.
