On 17 February 2021, Facebook stopped its Australian users from sharing local or international news. In addition, Australian news organizations that operated Facebook Pages were not only unable to share content on their pages but also had their Pages wiped of historical content. Facebook had been arguing with the Australian Government over a controversial new law that would force platforms to pay for news content and had regu-larly threatened to withdraw services from the country as the policy was being developed. However, it was still something of a surprise when the ban happened. Overnight, Facebook stopped serving news to an entire country and no-one could stop them. They only reinstated news after the Australian Government made last-minute concessions (Meade, Taylor and Hurst 2021).
