This book is the result of an empirical study that supports the existence of a specific intelligence which we have termed vocational intelligence (VQ). Howard Gardner’s initial theory on Multiple Intelligences mentions the existence of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. According to Gardner, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence refers to an individual’s ability to process information physically through hand and body movements, control, and expression. We define someone possessing vocational intelligence (VQ) as an individual who demonstrates vocational personality, vocational interest, vocational talent, vocational skills, and vocational creativity. Previous empirical studies on vocational intelligence are very limited. This clearly indicates a significant knowledge gap, prompting us to conduct a detailed study on vocational intelligence. The research findings reveal five domains that describe an individual’s vocational intelligence (VQ): (a) vocational personality, (b) vocational interest, (c) visualization ability, (d) motor skills, and (e) vocational creativity. There is a slight conceptual difference between intelligence and talent. Talent is defined as a natural ability inherent in an individual to perform a specific task. Therefore, vocational talent refers to an individual’s manual dexterity to execute or complete a task. An individual with vocational intelligence, on the other hand, possesses vocational personality, interest, talent, and skills. Historically, studies on intelligence began with IQ (Intellectual Quotient), followed by MI (Multiple Intelligence), and EQ (Emotional Intelligence). However, none of these have truly focused on VQ (Vocational Intelligence). This book serves as an introductory guide to understanding the concept and theory of VQ (Vocational Intelligence). It also introduces the MyVQ inventory, which measures the vocational intelligence of children and adolescents in Malaysia. This inventory has been developed through research, and meets the established psychometric criteria.
