Since 2009, Emergency Medicine residency graduates have trusted our case-based books as a practical way to prepare for high-stakes, interactive oral examinations. We have tried to distill years of residency training and study into a collection of cases because, at the end of the day, we care for patients one by one. We hope this format continues to be a helpful review and preparation for interactive examinations. This edition is being released during a significant transition: the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is moving from the legacy Oral Certification Examination to the in-person Certifying Exam administered at the AIME Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. ABEM describes this new Certifying Exam as the final step to becoming ABEM certified, and notes that candidates complete 10 cases during a half-day session. ABEM also explains that the exam is built around two assessment types – Clinical Care Cases and Communication & Procedure Cases – intended to reflect simulated, real-world clinical scenarios.
