As I taught constitutional law to young students over a number of years, I worried about the limited time available in the curriculum to explain what stock words in the standard texts, such as ‘legal’, ‘constitutional’, ‘national’, ‘representative’, ‘jurisdiction’, ‘rights’, and many more actually mean. Eventually I began wondering about it myself, and wrote a bit about it. When I was bitten by the comparative bug, I realized that there are many of these essential constitutional words that peers working in other jurisdictions would understand in different ways.
