Language is dynamic, shifting and changing over time according to the needs of its users. In a heteronormative, cisnormative world, language creation is one of the ways that those who live outside the norms of sexuality and gender resist normative frameworks and imposed labels, and build community with one another. Terminology is critically important in self-determination as well as in collective, community understandings of identities, experiences, and ways of being that have been violently suppressed and marginalized. It is, therefore, important to carefully consider and explain my use of language and terminology.
