I wanted to challenge myself—first by completing my PhD and then by transforming my PhD thesis into a book. Along the way, I have received help, guidance and support from a multitude of people and entities.
I was exceptionally fortunate with my PhD supervisors. My primary supervisor, Professor Madeline Carr of University College London’s (UCL) Department of Computer Science, has never failed to champion me—both during my PhD years as well as after, as I transformed my thesis into this book. Madeline has gone out of her way time and again to help me enrich and further my professional development. In doing so, she has catalysed many exciting opportunities that have, and still are, changing my life. I am deeply grateful for Madeline’s interest and dedication to me as her student and hope that as I progress in my career, I can emulate her example. Anyone working with Madeline should know (as if they don’t already!) how incredibly fortunate they are to have her on their team.
My secondary supervisor, Professor Brian Balmer of UCL’s Department of Science and Technology Studies, was a fantastic addition to my thesis team. His expertise complemented that of Madeline’s beautifully. Brian’s disciplinary perspective, enthusiasm for research, approach to academic practice and deep knowledge of the literature have been invaluable in developing this project, as well as my skills and outlook on life as a researcher. He too has been exceptionally generous with his time and has never failed to offer rich and useful input, which has challenged my thinking and pushed me to go further in my considerations. I am an absolute devotee of Brian’s philosophy of taking things for a walk—indeed, not all thoughts are developed at the computer. In the final stage of my PhD, both Madeline and Brian went above and beyond the call of duty as my supervisors. They helped me navigate unprecedented circumstances and achieve the best possible outcome. For that relentless dedication and effort, I am forever grateful. Thank you both so much.
I would also like to express my thanks to Professor Arthur Petersen and Professor Yacob Mulugetta of UCL’s Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP) for their involvement in my PhD upgrade. I am also deeply grateful to Professor Shaofeng Liu of the University of Plymouth’s Business School for taking on the role of my external examiner for this occasion. In doing so, she evaluated my adoption and adaption of her Knowledge Management Model as my theoretical framework. Her input and stamp of approval were invaluable in progressing the project into its later stages.

I would also like to acknowledge my PhD cohort—what a rollercoaster we were on… I think it is safe to say we got off windblown with many war stories to tell between us… But I am so grateful for your company and friendship on that ride.
