Distributed parameter systems provide a natural representation for infinited imensional dynamical systems with variables depending on time and space. Among these systems, we find energy systems (hydraulic channels, heat exchangers, drilling devices), transportation systems (traffic networks, cable-operated elevators), biology, and robotics. The transport and propagation phenomena appearing in these systems are the source of complex control engineering problems. Furthermore, their design has to cope with stringent environmental, safety, and economic feasibility constraints.
