The Western-style healthcare system was imported into the region now known as Nigeria over 500 years ago, through the trans-Sahara trade routes by the European traders, explorers, colonial military and civilian administrators, and later the missionaries. The first national health plan in Nigeria was developed in 1947 by the colonial masters with the primary goal to provide universal health care to the citizens. To date, this goal remains an illusion.
