The impetus for this book comes from my sixteen years of studying the subject of unidentified flying objects as basically a full-time occupation. My college years were spent studying to obtain a BS in chemistry, while participating in intercollegiate debate. Chemistry nurtured my curiosity and scientific way of approaching a problem, while debate provided my framework for critical thinking through deductive and inductive reasoning. My work experience encompassed engineering, device physics, and statistical analysis as I spent most of my career in the semiconductor world of nanotechnologies. I enjoyed the challenges of the work and after twenty-eight years of corporate America, I was fortunate to have been able to retire at an early age. This provided me the opportunity to choose my next direction. One of the choices that I made was to look into the subject of UFOs. I was interested because of a book that I had read as a teenager, The UFO Experience by Dr. J. Allen Hynek. It was written in a scientific manner, which I appreciated. I returned to a subject that I had not thought about for the last thirty-five years, but that flame of curiosity was still there. I considered the possibility that the subject would be one that I would quickly dismiss after studying, and then move on to a different area of interest. Instead, the subject opened a new chapter in my life. I joined an organization called MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) in 2006. I wanted to learn about the UFO subject firsthand. Within a few months of my joining MUFON, the organization posted an opening for a director of research. I read the expectations for the position, and I was appalled. They wanted to know where UFOs came from, what was their intention, and their method of propulsion. Nonetheless, I applied. I wrote that I would not address any of those questions because my first primary question was whether there was any reality to the phenomenon itself. I expected that my reply would eliminate me from the competition. I was shocked when I was contacted and awarded the position. I can only guess that my work experience as the manager of Advanced Micro Device’s R&D lab, their chemistry lab, and my engineering manager experience must have caused MUFON to make me their director of research. My goal was to put more “science” into how MUFON operated. My knowledge of the UFO phenomenon was born from a series of events that began in early 2007. The director of MUFON asked me to put together a team to study the history of the UFO phenomenon. He suggested that I contact an individual outside of MUFON by the name of Dr. Michael Swords. Mike had a BS and MS in chemistry with a PhD in science history. Furthermore, he had devoted his life to the study of UFOs. Mike was a member of CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies) and had known Dr. J. Allen Hynek personally. I could not have found a better mentor. Mike provided the rational, scientific view of the phenomenon that I needed to hear. He introduced me to the other no-nonsense researchers who were in the field. Our work culminated five years later in a collegiate-level book on the subject, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry. Meanwhile, I continued my role as the director of research for MUFON, and I also completed field investigations in a secondary role. I interviewed over 150 people in person during my investigations. I poured over thousands of cases within the MUFON database that had been collected from the 1970s through 2015. I read through the books that weren’t as popular in the UFO community but that were written by scientists and historians: Project Investigation, The UFO Enigma, Clear Intent, Anatomy of a Phenomenon, Grassroots UFOs, and Unconventional Flying Objects. I established a Science Review Board made up of scientists to evaluate the best cases. There was a strong need for more scientists to be involved in the study of this phenomenon.
