‘Take this book and go and read it to them.’ ‘Read it out loud?’ Ginny Cole’s jaw dropped. She wasn’t someone who stated the obvious but surely there had been a misunderstanding. ‘Do I really need to answer that? This is a library, after all.’ Louisa Farnsworth raised an arched eyebrow. She was probably in her mid-forties with a straight nose, very blonde hair and a curvy figure that was currently wrapped in a fitted black dress. Ginny suspected the dress was from some expensive label she’d never heard of. Her own outfit was the same white linen shirt and navy trousers that had been selected for comfort and practicality. She’d built up her wardrobe ever since her marriage to Eric, thirty-five years ago, when she’d taken over the job of running his surgery. She’d only been twenty-five at the time and had quickly learnt no one was looking at her. She was good at being in the background, making sure things ran smoothly. ‘But I’m not familiar with the story.’ Ginny clutched the picture book her new manager had thrust at her. A group of mothers had gathered in the dark corner of the gloomy library. Some were in chairs, while others leaned against well-worn cushions as they tried to contain small, screaming children. ‘They’re a bunch of two-year-olds. They don’t know it either. I’m not sure why you’re looking so surprised. You did apply to work in a library.’ Louisa flipped open the grey leather-bound diary she’d been holding, as if to confirm Ginny was in fact the correct person. Then she let out a disappointed sigh and closed the diary. Ginny tried not to wilt under the unspoken jab at her character. It was true she’d applied to become the part-time librarian in the small Lancashire village of Little Shaw, tucked deep in the Rossendale Valley and surrounded by moors. She’d only moved there from Bristol two weeks ago, and honestly hadn’t expected to get the position at the community-run library, which had been taken over by the parish after funding cuts had threatened to see it close. But after a short interview with the chairperson, Marigold Bentley, on Friday, she’d been offered the job on the spot. There had been no mention of story time, or Louisa Farnsworth for that matter. And it was clear that Marigold hadn’t told Louisa much about Ginny either. Had the library manager been expecting someone younger? Less drab? Better at spontaneously reading picture books to children? ‘It’s my first day. I thought there would be an orientation before we started.’ She hated how meek she sounded. A lifetime of practice would do that to a person. ‘Books. Toilets. Issue counter.’ Louisa jabbed a perfectly manicured fingernail in different directions around the room, like a traffic warden tired of doing the same job again and again. ‘Consider yourself orientated. Now, go and read the book. And once you’ve finished, I’ll show you how to use the computer. You can use a computer, can’t you?’ ‘Yes.’ Ginny tightened her grip on the well-worn book cover and tried not to notice how much her hands were shaking. Maybe Nancy had been right.
