Although these English words are both pronounced the same they have very different meanings. The word “weird” originally derived from the old Anglo-Saxon “wyrd”. Weird is an adjective that describes an unusual, perhaps supernatural experience or it is used as a pejorative adjective for someone outwith the accepted social norms. Wyrd is a noun that means the control of fate or destiny. By the 15th century the word wyrd was used to describe someone who can control their own destiny. If you are someone who believes they have to right to control your own fate and not be subject to the winds of fate then you are a wyrd. It is, of course, more than likely that those around you may view you as a weird person or as someone who holds weird beliefs.
