The main aim of the introduction is to provide a systematic and analytical picture of the state of the art of digital semiotics and to outline some ideas for the future development of the discipline. The first part is an attempt to construct a map of the existing semiotic contributions, divided by the different theoretic schools, and encompassing the major languages of the semiotic community’s publications. The second part is devoted to certain critical remarks on the main semiotic paradigms, as applied to digital culture. The main critique is that most of the existing contributions do not question classical semiotic models, but rather adapt the new cultural reality to them. There is also a strong division between the schools and scholars, ignoring each other’s publications.
