United States (U.S.) healthcare delivery systems have traditionally been viewed as a network of providers, payers and regulatory bodies dedicated to providing medical services to patients across the country and is the only industrialized country that does not have some form of universal health coverage (UHC) for all citizens. Other countries around the globe achieve this through single payer systems, socialized medicine, government mandates or a hybrid of approaches.
In recent years, however, the view of the U.S. healthcare delivery system has been expanded to reflect the growing belief that medicine is no longer simply the act of administering a cure to make sick people healthy. Rather, healthcare stakeholders now include all who have a vested interest in ensuring that healthy citizens remain that way and that those who are ill have access to the best care possible, in multiple avenues including non-traditional care settings.
As a result, patients, for example, are no longer considered passive recipients of care. Rather, they are increasingly viewed as partners in the development of care strategies that will address both their immediate health conditions and their long-term prospects for leading healthy lives.
