This introduction describes the importance of each contribution in the volume for the entire topic of “society and the unconscious”. It begins with cultural-psychological foundations of the topic based on detailed analyses of fundamental concepts of Freud’s cultural psychology: origin of culture, basic traumas of culture, sexual psychology, libido theory, mass psychology, and criticism by T. Burrow. This is followed by cultural-psychological analyses of current social conditions: change of gender relations, socio-structural conditions, family reproduction conditions, political power relations, personality structure of people, and the significance of threatening financial-economic constellations for political and social security and the emergence of mass-psychological political movements. The present collection of essays is the result of a social scientific study exploring the social structure underlying the individual psychological and social psychological processes that we psychologists and psychotherapists find every day in ourselves and our clients. As it turns out, these socio- structural processes are largely unconscious to the members of our society as well as often to the investigating social scientist himself, even though various, especially sociological findings point to this (Bühl, 2000). Nevertheless, this unconscious social structure psychologically affects everyone, it is the socio-structural housing in which we move and into which we are born as the surrounding real social and mental-cultural structure of our thinking. How much this social structure determines the behavior of the individual, but also small or large collectives, becomes visible when the long-time almost stable social structure changes, when it changes, as it did especially in the last 50 years. In the sequence of the book’s contributions, the author’s scientific search movement as well as his cultural psychological findings are presented.
