Administratively Adrift is a work that has been years in the making, tinged with personal experiences from a long and successful career in an institution I love – the university. The capacity of colleges and universities to transform lives is, in a word, awesome. However, like all institutions, it can and must evolve in order to improve. And in order to improve, it needs to assess its weaknesses, embrace its limitations, and make the necessary adjustments to respond to the community of students it welcomes. Hopefully, this book will foster further dialogue about necessary change. The United States and its universities are facing near-Biblical upheavals – seismic disruptions that I refer to in the book as “crucible experiences.” The effects of these crucible experiences have been profound for American society at large and devastating for today’s generation of college students, often referred to as Generation Z. The chapters that follow draw upon multiple sources of information about colleges and universities, their history, their organizational evolution, and their interactions with students. Some of the sources are anecdotal, told through case studies of student encounters that highlight the unintended consequences of interactions with administrative offices, systems, policies, and practices. Other information comes from sources such as institutional databases and records, captured from the unique vantage point I have had as a chief academic officer at American University.
