It’s been more than seventeen years since the first edition of this book was published, and it’s amazing how much SAP technology adoption we’ve seen during that timeframe. Indeed, in the ten years that have passed since we wrote the second edition of this book, we saw the introduction of both SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). Most recently, the launch of the SAP BTP ABAP environment has allowed developers to take their ABAP talents to the cloud. While these are exciting developments, the core concepts of objectoriented programming (OOP) haven’t really changed. What has changed is the widespread use of ABAP Objects across an everexpanding SAP landscape. Knowledge of ABAP Objects used to be seen as a “nice-to-have,” but now it’s an essential part of every ABAP developer’s toolbox. So, once again, we felt the time was right to take a fresh look at OOP with ABAP Objects. Our goal with this revised and expanded edition is the same as the first edition: to teach you how to think about writing ABAP-based software from an object-oriented perspective. While it takes a fair amount of time and effort to embrace this way of thinking, we believe you’ll find the investment worthwhile from both a personal and professional standpoint.
