This book is through SAE International, and our experience is largely automotive; as such, this product development work has an automotive setting. That should not suggest that this book only applies to automotive product development. The tools and techniques demonstrated apply to many and perhaps all product development. All product development is learning, and this book demonstrates the questions to pose and mechanisms for learning. Vehicles have changed over the decades. Products and product development in general have changed. There was a divergence of capabilities and differences in the various vehicle manufacturers. For example, at the outset, there were electric vehicles, steam-powered vehicles, and internal combustion engines. Each manufacturer is betting on a particular propulsion system. Over time there has been a convergence of vehicle platforms along with industry standards and regional regulations. Some things have stayed the same. Today the vehicle industry finds in the throes of adapting to meet the ecological demands driven by consumers and governmental regulations. Our company will need to understand any emergent technology and the application toward solving a vehicle problem, for example, improving safety or drivability, or meeting a customer’s desired feature. It is more complex than grabbing the technology and slapping it on the vehicle. To apply the new technology requires an understanding of that technology and how to specifically apply it. This understanding does not stop at the vehicle but also the application of any emerging technology to the manufacturing lines that produce the components, subsystems, systems, and, ultimately, the vehicle. Development costs and time to market are constant pressures that influence our ability to learn. Prudent decisions are based on experiments, learning and using the appropriate tools to help. This book follows the product development prerequisites, the things we need to explore up front, and processes and methods to accomplish. The work starts with the need for learning, exploring alternatives, and tools and techniques that facilitate learning. The work then moves to the development and maturity of the product and manufacturing.
