Maxwell Anderson’s contribution to American drama, particularly as revealed in his marriage plays of the Jazz Age, has never been fully appreciated by critics or scholars. Recent research on Anderson has been scant and evaluations of his work published in the twentieth century tended to center on his aesthetic use of verse drama during the 1930s. This book attempts to alter the lens in which Anderson’s reputation is viewed by focusing on the 1920s and examining Anderson’s plays as social critiques of an important, pervasive facet of American life and culture. Throughout the Progressive Era and into the Jazz Age, many Ameri-cans either lamented or welcomed (depending on their perspective) the notion that what was perceived as traditional marriage was embroiled in an existential crisis. In the last hundred years the institution of marriage in the United States has certainly evolved, but those in the 1920s who feared a “crisis,” who fretted over marriage’s imminent disintegration, underestimated the weight the institution bears in American culture. The plays of Maxwell Anderson covered in this book represent, therefore, an important resource for helping us better comprehend the nuances of the marriage debate during the Jazz Age and, in turn, aid in a more complete understanding of how marriage and gender roles in the United States have evolved.
