The present book is dedicated to the mathematical foundations of a physical theory which emerged over three decades ago. This theory is currently referred to as nonextensive statistical mechanics, and it consists of a generalization of the celebrated Boltzmann–Gibbs statistical mechanics, one of the pillars of contemporary theoretical physics. In order to put this generalization into an appropriate context, let us briefly remind the history of mechanics since Newtons Principia Mathematica.
