Deep in the Oort Cloud surrounding the star 107 Piscium, far from the squidge hordes swarming around the second planet, nothing stirred in the lifeless cold of space. The sudden appearance of a small, spherical spaceship disturbed this perfect panorama of darkness. Silence and stillness followed while the mistress of the little craft surveyed her surroundings, relying only on light from the distant star to aid her search. Presently, the ship disappeared again, only to reappear a lighthour away next to an icy object the size of a mountain. She shot a probe at this new companion and discovered her target was a dirty snowball: ices of various compounds, but that was all. She withdrew her probe and jumped to another object, and another, and another. It seemed the Oort Cloud comprised nothing but comets-in-waiting. However, the commander of the little vessel was nothing if not patient. On her thirteenth try, she found the Goldilocks target–a rocky asteroid, rich with veins of metal and swaddled in a thick layer of water ice. Perfect for her needs. Ports on the side of the ship opened to disgorge a horde of little packages that drifted down like snowflakes onto the surface of the asteroid. The little world’s slight gravity required only a subtle breath from the packages’ thrusters to bring them to a safe landing. Once grounded, the self-replicating starter packages went to work, burrowing beneath the ice to find the raw materials they needed. They built small fabricators that churned out components for yet more fabricators; factories capable of producing that which the newcomer desired. Ships and weapons. Lots of weapons. Satisfied, the mistress of the scout ship squirted a message on the tightest of beams toward distant Tau Ceti. Then she jumped again to continue the search for yet another asteroid that was just right, for the clouds of war were gathering and time was short. Hope’s sisters had work to do.
