There are two clear research traditions within medical geography.Historically the subject has been concerned with the cause andspread of disease; more recently attention has expanded toinclude the provision and consumption of health care. Availabletextbooks on medical geography have tended to perpetuate thisdivision. Indeed, it has been reflected in the structure of therecent successful international conferences run by medicalgeographers from the Institute of British Geographers and theAssociation of American Geographers; two separate groups havemet simultaneously in different rooms! One of our majorintentions has been to try to indicate the connections betweenthese two separate research traditions, and to provide a trueintroduction covering both facets of the subject.
