This handbook on settings-based health promotion originated during a meeting of the Global Interest Group1 on Healthy Settings during the 22nd IUHPE World Conference, on May 24th, 2016, in Curitiba, Brazil. The Global Interest Group acknowledged the opportunity to work together and share their expertise in producing a book that would build on the previous influential book written by Green et al. (2000). Other health promotion texts that followed do not have the settings approach as the primary focus or they are limited in scope, especially in relation to theoretical basis and mutual understanding across settings. The editors believe that this new publication is timely and novel. It comprehensively sets out reflections on the history and development of the approach with contemporary perspectives for academics, students, policymakers, and practitioners alike.
