Indian cities and towns have experienced major transformations since the economic reforms of July 1991. Large-scale investments have been made to build global quality infrastructural elements, such as metro systems, international airports, seaports, highway road networks, and rail-centred corridor developments, among others. Today’s middle classes have abundant opportunities to make housing choices within urban areas and their peripheries. Indian cities are increasingly characterised by modern shopping and entertainment spaces where the consuming classes lavishly spend their earnings.
