In 1975 Gerhard Riecker (1926–2022) together with several well-known practicing cardiologists first started the “Klinische Kardiologie” series that by now has had further eight totally updated new editions and throughout the years has become the standard textbook of cardiology in the German language community. Although the constantly renewed and well-accepted clinical guidelines published for instance by the European Society of Cardiology may offer good overviews on the important scientific developments, we nevertheless think that textbooks written by acknowledged clinical experts still have their place as they cover a broader spectrum of topics, including rare diseases, complicated therapies, and individual patient management strategies. A good textbook thus may encourage critical thinking by evaluating a wide range of studies and perspectives. We therefore hope this book will help cardiologists and healthcare providers treating patients with cardiovascular diseases to make informed decisions also in situations where guidelines may not provide clear answers. In this respect the authors of this book have included primarily evidence-based discussions of treatment modalities and always have referred to the established and evidence-based clinical guidelines. A few months ago, several European colleagues asked the publishers, editors, and authors of the latest 9th edition to translate it into English. This unusual and demanding task could only be accomplished with the help of AI. Thus, “Klinische Kardiologie” has now changed its name to “Clinical Cardiology.” Hopefully, the kind reader agrees with us on the maintained essential information as well as the well-structured and concise reading quality of this textbook of cardiology. Furthermore, we intend to regularly update at least the online version in yearly intervals. We are especially thankful to the many expert authors of the various chapters.
